Mentor Text: Singing Through Prison Walls

This video is about a woman named Naima Shalhoub who leads weekly music sessions with the women in the San Francisco County Jail. Not only does she sing to these women but she also takes time to hear about their lives and make them feel heard. She wants the incarcerated women she's singing to, to feel inspired, uplifted, and heard. While working to help these women directly, she is also working to help incarcerated people all over the world. With the money she makes from her album “Borderlands” she is going to donate 50% of the proceeds to help the restorative programs for people after they are released from prison. When people are released from prison they are given almost nothing to live off of. It is hard to find a job as well as some place to live. This video is very informative of how incarcerated women feel in jail and how they are treated once they are released. Naima Shalhoub, who is the narrator in this video, states clearly how much she cares about these women and how much she wants to help them. By recording her album and sharing her experience with the world, she is bringing lots of attention to this issue which can only cause others to want to help as well.
